The tea filter bag was not deliberately invented but emerged accidentally from an unexpected situation. In fact, a tea merchant once intended to send tea samples to his customers and, in order to preserve the full aroma and freshness, he packaged the teas in small silk squares. When the customers received them, many chose to place the entire silk pouch directly into hot water for brewing rather than removing the leaves. It was through this practical and convenient use that the tea filter bag was unintentionally created.
The tea bag fulfills a dual function. First, it allows the flavor and aroma of the tea to infuse evenly into your cup, teapot, mug, or glass during steeping. Second, it acts as a filtration barrier, preventing loose tea leaves from spreading throughout the container while the tea is brewing. Unlike many commercially produced tea bags that may feature a pyramidal design for enhanced infusion, traditional empty tea filter bags are typically flat and rectangular in shape.
